Bushfires are a natural part of the Australian landscape, but they often have devastating consequences for those who face them unprepared. When building in a bushfire-prone area there are obligations to meet with regards to what you build and how you build it.

As a result of the devastating effects of bushfires on properties and on human lives, the NSW government introduced legislation in August 2002 to ensure that new developments are safer and better protected from this threat.

Before you can build in a bushfire prone area you will need to apply for and obtain a BAL Risk Assessment Certificate. Without this you will be unable to build a new development.

One of the best ways to protect from bushfires is to create a fuel-free zone around the home. This can be done using stone features, ponds and walkways that loop all the way around your home. Planting fire-resistant plants around your home is also a good option for keeping the fire at bay.
