Bushfire-Compliant. Beautifully Designed. Built for Real Living.
Nestled in the leafy surrounds of Mt Colah on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, this project is a standout example of how safety and style can work hand-in-hand.
Located in a BAL-FZ (Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone) area, this home required materials and construction methods that meet the highest compliance standards under the NSW Rural Fire Service Planning for Bush Fire Protection (2019) and AS3959-2018.
But compliance was just the beginning.
The Challenge
The homeowners wanted more than a deck — they wanted a functional outdoor living space that felt like a natural extension of their home.
Before construction:
- The outdoor area was underutilised
- Limited shade and weather protection
- No defined entertaining zone
- No all-season usability
They needed a solution that would:
- Meet strict bushfire regulations
- Maximise usable space
- Improve comfort year-round
- Elevate the visual appeal of the home
The Transformation
We designed and constructed a custom insulated skillion alfresco, seamlessly attached to the house, creating a true outdoor room rather than just a covered deck.
The high ceiling enhances airflow and openness, while the clean architectural lines complement the home’s modern aesthetic.
The result?
A light-filled, protected entertaining zone that completely changes how the family uses their home.
What Changed
- The backyard is now an extension of the living room
- Entertaining space doubled in practical use
- Year-round protection from sun, wind and rain
- Increased comfort, safety and property value
- Defined zones for dining, relaxing and entertaining
